2.2 Inventory and interactive objects
All the soldier's items are contained within his inventory. To bring up the inventory window during the game
use "I" key. Each square shows one of the objects. The quantity of objects of this type and the weight of a single unit are shown in the upper part of the square. The aggregate weight and the weight a soldier is still able to carry are reflected in the right window. To use an inventory object (for example, a syringe) drag the object over onto "USE" window with a mouse. In order to throw an object away, drag it over onto the "Drop" window. Some objects can not be thrown away (costumes, auto-gun etc..).
Remember - you can frisk the bodies of your enemies (and your dead team-mate) in the game. To do this come up to a corpse, aim at it (it will be outlined with a single white frame) and then press the "USE" key. The inventory window will now open. In the lower part of the screen the items that you have found are reflected. Simply drag and drop the items into your inventory above to have them transferred. Remember that you must not exceed your carrying limit - or you won't be able to pick anything up.
The objects that are thrown away will be left lying on the ground. To pick them up, come right up to an object, aim at it (it will be outlined with a single white frame) and then press the "USE" key. In CTF mode objects are picked up when "run across".
In particular places on the level there are recharging units where your costume energy can be recharged. Come up to the unit, aim at it (it will be outlined with a white frame) and then press "USE" key. Hold the key until the recharging is completed.
2.3 HUD
In the upper part of the screen a compass is reflected. A red triangle on the compass shows the direction for mission accomplishment (Target point). A white triangle indicates the direction to the chosen target.
A green triangle shows the direction to the chosen map point (waypoint, is selected with "=" key).
In the upper right corner your teammate's condition is shown.
With the help of "/" key (Miniview mode) one can bring up a small window, showing either a map view or a view from the teammate's eyes. You can switch the camera between the members of your squad in CTF mode with the [] keys.
"Health" and costume energy are shown with the indicators on your arm. The quantity of bullets in a magazine, total number of magazines and the current shooting mode are shown on the weapon indicator.
2.4 Weapons
There are a variety of weapons to be found in the game. Pressing keys 1-8 will allow you to choose the mode of your gun. Please note, you must select the weapon from you armoury before you start the mission and remember that not all weapons are available from the outset.
3. Configuration
After the setup is complete, left-click on Start-Programs-Outbreak, point your mouse at Config.exe and double-click on it. The Outbreak configuration program will now run. It is very important to have the game settings matching your computer system, so carefully make all of the necessary adjustments.
Video Options
Use the "Video options" button to select your rendering device. There will be only a "primary device" listed, if you have only one video card in your system, which is capable of producing 3D acceleration. If a "Secondary device" or "3DFX Voodoo 2 DirectX( driver" is listed, then your system and the game are telling you that your 3D accelerator card is an add-on card, secondary card - either way, both should support Codename Outbreak. A hardware 3D accelerator is required to run this game (RivaTNT recommended). The game does not support software mode.
While selecting your video configuration check the test scene compatibility. Take into account that to have the game working, you must have the DirectX version not lower than 5.0 on your computer. We recommend version 7.0 or above.
Sound Options
To configure your sound card press "Sound options" key and select a sound driver. A wrongly selected driver can result in error when running the program, so make sure you choose the driver that best suits the hardware in your system. Again, as long as your sound card drivers are fully up-to-date and you have the latest version of Direct X( installed, you should encounter no problems.
3.1 Compatibility with various operating systems
More often than not, compatibility problems arise due to a lack of full Direct X support for your video card or sound card. This game is designed to run under Windows 95/98/ME. Please note that limited testing has been carried out with Windows 2000.
The installation of Beta-drivers can also often cause this problem. If the game refuses to run, check the DirectX install and the state of your Direct X drivers with the help of the DxDiag.EXE utility (this performs a Direct3D test and can be run by clicking on your Start bar, then RUN and then type in DXDIAG and click on OK). You should initially look at each of the tabs and see if there are any issues with your drivers in the notes box at the bottom of the screen - these often come back being reported as uncertified drivers. In any case, as mentioned, you will find that your sound card and video card drivers are normally the culprits, so you should always keep these updated by obtaining the latest full release drivers from your system supplier or visiting the hardware manufacturer's web-site.
Please note, that the game does not work under Windows NT due to a lack of full Direct X driver support and under Windows 2000 we have encountered problems with sticking mouse buttons. As mentioned, limited testing has been carried out under Windows 2000, so if you do experience problems, please contact our Customer Services department or the relevant Customer Services department in your country and we will try to help.
Here are some of the known issues that we have encountered:
Windows 2000 - We have discovered that on Windows 2000, the left-mouse button may stick.
Alt+Tab - We have found that sustained use of Alt+Tab to minimise the game and return to Windows has also caused many problems.
Jerky movies - We have found that using the latest codec (Indeo( 5.11) supplied on the game CD addresses this problem. Please also ensure that you have the latest Direct X drivers installed.
Online issues - we have found that the game may lost the connection through Gamespy if you are playing behind a firewall, trying to launch a server from behind a firewall or create a game in Gamespy itslef. Please read the Multi-player information in the manual for a better explanation.
Game Runs In Window - We have found that if the configuration program is not run immediately after installation, that the game will initially default to running in a window.
3.2 Performance increasing
Do not run other applications simultaneously with the game. To increase the game speed, try using a lower screen resolution and 16-bit colour mode under Windows. Disabling detailed textures may also increase the speed of the game by 5-10%.
If you have a video card with video memory of less than 32Mb, please do not enable high resolution textures mode. Otherwise, this will cause a substantial FPS (frames per second) drop, depending on the scene complexity (especially on open levels). With 8 Mb systems and lower it is recommended to switch off the detail textures mode altogether.
A lot of different texture methods are used in the game. Due to the volume, some of these textures are loaded from the hard-disk directly during the game, so please ensure that your hard drive is regularly defragmented and that you have ample space after installing the game approximately 500mb-1gb should be ample.
If you discover that you machine is close to the minimum required specification, please ensure that you are running no other programs before you start the game. To check this, press CTRL+ALT+DEL in Windows and end all tasks (by clicking on End Task) apart from Systray and Explorer - these must be left running.
